Project Description:

3D scanning and reverse engineering was required to produce  “natively parametric” CAD files  in SOLIDWORKS®, CATIA®, and PTC Creo® formats for a manufacturer of marine carburetors.

Feature trees were required to facilitate downstream design changes.

For this project, a large manufacturer of marine engines required the reverse engineered files of a carburetor to be delivered in “native parametric” format for the company’s three software packages, SOLIDWORKS®, CATIA®, and PTC Creo®.

At Scansite3D we usually deliver reverse engineered CAD files in either STEP or Solidworks® X_T (parasolid) format.  These formats suffice for most applications and are the least expensive option – and if the downstream process does not extensive involves  design changes, then these are the preferred formats.  Note, however, that STEP and X_T formats will not import into your CAD software with a full feature tree.  Rather, the imported files will be a single item in the feature tree, usually called “imported solid”.

If you are making more than cursory changes to your reverse engineered file, and you are using SOLIDWORKS®, CATIA®, or PTC Creo®  software, you may be interested in Scansite3D’s  ability to provide files for these software packages that include full “natively parametric” feature trees.

Scansite3D provides these files using the unique reverse engineering abilities of our Geomagic DesignX software.  Using DesignX, the feature tree in built from the scan data and then exported to the downsteam software – SOLIDWORKS®, CATIA®, or PTC Creo®.
